Chief Scientific Officer and Head of Chemistry Join Arrow Therapeutics

London, UK, 9th October 2000... Arrow Therapeutics Ltd, the rapidly emerging anti-infectives company, today announced the recent appointments of Professor Ian Charles as Chief Scientific Officer and Dr Stuart Cockerill as Head of Chemistry.

Ian Charles was one of the original founders of Arrow Therapeutics and has now joined the company as an executive board member and member of the Scientific Advisory Board. He has a background in anti-infectives, genetics, and molecular pharmacology, and spent eight years at the pharmaceutical company, Wellcome, where he rose to the Head of Molecular Pharmacology, leading a team of about 40 scientists. Most recently he has held an academic post as the Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the newly formed Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research in London. He is the author of over 100 publications and his work has led to over 20 patent filings. Whilst at Wellcome he was a key member of the team responsible for the molecular characterisation of pertactin, an essential component of the new acellular whooping cough vaccine, now sold by SmithKline Beecham.

Stuart Cockerill has a background in anti-infectives, oncology, cardiovascular disease, immunology and drug discovery. Prior to joining Arrow Therapeutics, he was at GlaxoWellcome (previously the Wellcome Foundation) for over 13 years where he held project leadership positions in a successful anti-cancer group and, most recently, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) projects which progressed into the pre-clinical phase. Stuart Cockerill was also the leader of a workgroup responsible for the introduction of new technologies in combinatorial/parallel synthesis for the optimisation of new drug candidates. Previous academic experience includes a Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Glasgow, as well as a Postdoctoral research position at the Cornell University, in the US and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Leeds.

Commenting on the appointments, Ken Powell, CEO of Arrow said:
"Following our successful financing, Arrow is now in an active recruitment phase. Led by Ian Charles, we are significantly expanding our molecular biology team - the appointment of Stuart Cockerill in a difficult global market for high calibre medicinal chemists, is a key step in the expansion of our medicinal chemistry capabilities. We anticipate to have reached 30 staff by the year end".

In July, Arrow announced the completion of an £11.1 million venture financing and the signing of a significant R&D collaboration with Triangle Pharmaceuticals Inc.
